Alpaca Farm Life

In 2009 we traded a busy city life for life on the farm. While we’re only a 15 minute ferry ride from the mainland we find we love the pace and beauty of life on Whidbey Island and have no need to head into city traffic. Now that I’ve retired from actively breeding alpacas I still enjoy the farmlife.

Becoming farmers turned out to be an easy adjustment for us city folk. I first noticed that on the farm we pay more attention to the nuances of the weather. Will it be cold enough today to put on long underwear? Or maybe the rain will let up in an hour and we can do farm chores without getting wet.

Some mornings I just didn’t feel like getting out of my warm bed and going out in the cold to feed the critters. But, once those adorable furry faces welcome you to the barn, all is good and you appreciate the rhythm of life on the farm.

The satisfaction of caring for the critters, the pace of farm life and harvesting their exquisite fleece has made it an easy transition from city to farm.

Alpaca 4H. One of the greatest joys we’ve had from our alpaca farm life is being involved with young people through our alpaca 4H club – Inca Pride Alpacas. Our 4H members are hardworking, delightful youngsters. At 8 years old they can start working with the alpacas. And we have watched them grow up, gain confidence, become poised public speakers and excellent mentors to younger 4H members. The 4H graduates have found the skills and personal confidence they gained through 4H has helped them prepare for their college careers. Our daughter delivered her senior high school speech on the valuable lessons she learned from training her favorite llama for 4H competitions. And, our alpacas benefit from the extra training and interaction with the public at the county fair each August.

FelixCUWhat could alpacas add to your life? If you have a couple of acres and would love easy-to-care for and lovable livestock to enhance your farm experience we highly recommend alpacas. We’d be delighted to talk with you about the alpaca farm life. All of our herd are happily at new homes, however, we can put you in touch with alpaca breeders who have quality animals for you to consider.
